Try Out Information

This information is provided to help families who are looking for opportunities for players to play at a competitive level. Tryouts are guided by rules set by WYSA, and may be offered by clubs for the purpose of creating competitive teams: Classic level,  State League, Wisconsin Developmental Academy(WDA), and National League.

Who should attend tryouts?  All players with a birth year of 2006 - 2014 wishing to be placed on a team for the 2024-2025 season.

Competitive fees: Once an offer is received players need to register and pay their registration fee for the year McFarland Soccer Club.

Registration can be done here: https://mcfarlandsoccer.demosphere-secure.com/_registration

Competitive players also pay a coaching fee as all Competitive teams have coaches with at least an ‘E’ level license.  Additional coaching fees that range from $400-550 per season apply depending on the level of the team and coach’s experience.

Leagues that teams play in: Most of our teams will play in various tiers of MAYSA and some of the elite teams will play at the State level. Travel for the MAYSA teams is typically 15-30 minutes for away games. For State teams travel times can vary from 20 minutes to 2 hours.

Expectations of those making tryout teams: Tryout teams typically practice 2x a week for 75 minutes each practice and play 8 league games in the fall and the spring. In addition, tryout teams generally play in 2 tournaments in the fall and 2 in the spring. Tournaments on average cost an additional $25-40 per player per tournament.

Does my child need to attend tryouts? All players wishing to play Competitive soccer need to attend at least 1 night of the tryouts. It is strongly encouraged that all players attend both nights of tryouts especially if they are trying out for the first time or if they have never played classic soccer before.  Any player that cannot make either of the tryout dates can request an alternative tryout date by completing this form by May 20, Alternative Tryout Request. Questions can be answered by emailing MSC Vice President at vicepresident@mcfarlandsoccer.org.

What to expect at tryouts: Players should arrive between 30-60 minutes early on the first night of tryouts to make sure they are registered, given a jersey, and have a little time to warm up before the actual tryouts begin. Each player should have an appropriate size ball, water, cleats and guards. They must wear their tryout jersey to tryouts.

Tryouts are not open. All parents need to register their kids and then leave and return shortly before tryouts end.

Each age/gender grouping of players has a team of evaluators who evaluate the players and look for:

  1. Technical ability-This is the most important area as coaches want to see how the players work the ball at their feet, shoot, pass, etc.

  1. Tactical/field awareness- Do they know where to be on the field? Can they read the defense/attack? Do they know when to pass, shoot, provide cover on defense, etc.?

  1. Fitness/speed- Are they able to adequately cover the field? What is their endurance?

  1. Personality- Are they a good teammate? How do they deal with adversity? What is their level of effort?

Can players play up an age level? Yes, under rare circumstances, the evaluators/coaches may recommend that a player play up an age level to ensure they are being challenged as a soccer player. A player may try out for an older age level, however, and be placed at their rightful age level if the evaluators deem that the correct decision.

Notification of offers: Offers for classic teams will be emailed out. These offers will be emailed on June 14th by noon for all players (excluding HS players, their offers will be posted June 21st  at Noon) Parents will have 48 hours to accept the offer by completing registration.  After 48 hours MSC can rescind the offer.

Protests: As each team/player will be evaluated thoroughly by a team of knowledgeable evaluators all tryout decisions are final.

Dates and policies are designed to address issues of fairness and opportunities for players, as well as clubs.  MAYSA adheres to all WYSA policies regarding tryouts.

Classic Team Tryout: Makeup Policy

The player will only be allowed to attend 1 session instead of 2 sessions.

  1. The player will fill out the following form prior to May 20: Alternative Tryout Request. Questions can be answered by emailing MSC Vice President at vicepresident@mcfarlandsoccer.org.

  2. The player will register and pay for tryouts. This is the only way the club will know that a player requests placement on a team.

  3. Evaluation will take place during a practice.
