Try Out Information

This information is provided to help families who are looking for opportunities for players to play at a competitive level. Tryouts are guided by rules set by WYSA, and may be offered by clubs for the purpose of creating competitive teams: Classic level,  State League, Wisconsin Developmental Academy(WDA), and National League.

Who should attend tryouts? Any player who is wishing for a more competitive and challenging soccer experience.

Competitive fees: Once an offer is received players need to register and pay their registration fee for the year ($250) to McFarland Soccer Club (MSC) by July 1.

Registration can be done here:

Competitive players also pay a coaching fee as all Competitive teams have coaches with at least an ‘E’ level license. Coaching fees on average are $100-$400 per player depending on the size of the team they play on and depending on the coaching license/experience of that coach. The coaching fees are collected by the team managers prior to the start of the fall season.

Coaching assignments for 2021-2022 (Blue signifies the higher-level team):

At this time, we are in the process of finalizing coaching assignments.   We will be posting coaching assignments to the MSC website between now and the tryout dates.   We ask parents to please be patient, as we come out of the COVID19 pandemic (when coaching certifications were not available to obtain) the club needs additional time to verify coaching certifications, coach availability, etc.

Leagues that teams play in: Most of our teams will play in various tiers of MAYSA and some off the elite teams will play at the State level. Travel for the MAYSA teams is typically 15-30 minutes for away games. For State teams travel times can vary from 20 minutes to 2 hours.

Expectations of those making tryout teams: Tryout teams typically practice 2x a week for 90 minutes each practice and play 8 league games in the fall and the spring. In addition, tryout teams generally play in 2 tournaments in the fall and 2 in the spring. Tournaments on average cost an additional $25-40 per player per tournament.

Players making tryout teams are required to be at all practices/games/tournaments. Players who know they will not make at least 75% of the aforementioned items should opt for our recreational soccer offerings.

Competitive teams also train in the winter and summer, and play indoor soccer and/or futsal. The winter/summer trainings are optional but recommended.

Does my child need to attend tryouts? All players(with the exception of high schoolers) wishing to play Competitive soccer need to attend at least 1 night of the tryouts. It is strongly encouraged that all players attend both nights of tryouts especially if they are trying out for the first time or if they have never played classic soccer before. Any player that cannot make either of the tryout dates must contact the MSC President at to schedule their evaluation session.

What to expect at tryouts: Players should arrive at least 20 minutes early on the first night of tryouts to make sure they are registered, given a jersey, and have a little time to warm up before the actual tryouts begin. Each player should have an appropriate size ball, water, cleats and guards. They must wear their tryout jersey to tryouts.

Tryouts are not open. All parents need to register their kids and then leave and return shortly before tryouts end.

Tryouts are conducted by members of the McFarland SC who hold an “E” license or higher. Each age/gender grouping of players has a team of evaluators who evaluate the players and look for:

  1. Technical ability-This is the most important area as coaches want to see how the players work the ball at their feet, shoot, pass, etc.

  1. Tactical/field awareness- Do they know where to be on the field? Can they read the defense/attack? Do they know when to pass, shoot, provide cover on defense, etc.?

  1. Fitness/speed- Are they able to adequately cover the field? What is their endurance?

  1. Personality- Are they a good teammate? How do they deal with adversity? What is their level of effort?

Can players play up an age level? Yes, under rare circumstances, the evaluators/coaches may recommend that a player play up an age level to ensure they are being challenged as a soccer player. A player may try out for an older age level, however, and be placed at their rightful age level if the evaluators deem that the correct decision.

Notification of offers: Offers for classic teams will be emailed out. These offers will be emailed on June 25th by noon for all players (excluding HS players, their offers will be posted July 2nd at Noon) Parents will have 24 hours to respond with an email to confirming or rejecting the offer. After the 24 hours MSC can rescind the offer.

My child did not receive an offer, what now? If you child did not receive an offer, they will be placed on the recreational team for their particular age grouping where available. There is always the possibility that MSC may have to combine age levels to make certain teams, for instance there may not be enough girls for a u11 recreational team, but there could be enough for a u11/u12 recreational team.

Protests: As each team/player will be evaluated thoroughly by a team of knowledgeable evaluators all tryout decisions are final.

Dates and policies are designed to address issues of fairness and opportunities for players, as well as clubs.  MAYSA adheres to all WYSA policies regarding tryouts.

Please review the full policy for details including offer and acceptance requirements in document linked below:
