MSC Play Up or Play Down Policy

  1. Requests must be submitted and reviewed each season. No carry over from prior seasons is automatically recognized.
  2. Requests should be based on individual player development and quality, not convenience (such as siblings, carpools, etc.)
  3. No player may request to “play up” more than 1 age group.
  4. Requests must be made in writing at least 2 weeks before the start of tryouts for U11 and older OR 2 weeks before the end of registration for U10 and younger.
  5. Requests for U10 and younger will be reviewed by the Director and Assistant Director of Coaching with input from the current coach based on the player’s physical, psychological, technical and tactical skill. Requests to play down for U9 and older must also be approved by league governing body (MAYSA).
  6. Players requesting to play up at U11 or higher must be able to make both nights of tryouts. They will attend 1 night with their designated age group and 1 night with the play up age group.
  7. To be offered a roster spot on the most competitive team in the older age group (Blue), the player must demonstrate during tryouts that they are among the top 5 players in the older age group (with consensus from all 3 evaluators for the group). Otherwise they will be best served by playing with their designated age group.
  8. 8th graders born before August 1st, 2012 will be allowed to play U14 for teams in MAYSA league (not applicable to WYSA league teams).
  9. Players born after August 1st that are young for their grade will be allowed to play up to stay with their grade levels.
  10. Players born before August 1st that are old for their grade may be allowed to play down to stay with their grade level, but the exemption also requires approval from MAYSA who will have the final decision. (not applicable to WYSA league teams).
